Easy Ways to Become a Happier Person

I have always been a firm believer in the power of positive thoughts.

It might sound crazy, but the true key to happiness isn't some complicated mystery that is impossible to solve. There are a ton of ways to be happier, and in just a moment I am going to tell you how. However, the point I want to make isn't to follow this specific formula and *bam* you will become perfectly happy. The main point of this post is to show you that happiness comes from within your own mind. Today I am backing away from specifics and challenging you to look at the big picture of real, true happiness.

Spread Love

I think it is human nature to talk about other people or self-criticize, but that doesn't make it right nor healthy. We are all guilty of it sometimes, but when you talk negatively no matter who it's about, your brain subconsciously picks up on that negativity and turns it around on you. On the contrary, your brain also recognizes when you speak in a positive way towards yourself and others, leading to a happier mindset. Remember that what you put out, you get back.

Visualize

Whether it's scoring that new job, getting into your dream college, or even just getting that guy you like to notice you, we all know what it feels like to want something. Instead of waiting around and feeling anxious, do something that you can control. Find a quiet place and close your eyes. Picture yourself finally accomplishing that goal. It seems odd, but visualizing your goals is scientifically proven to make them more likely to come true. Aside from that, visualization is an amazing way to combat any negative thoughts or emotions you might be having.

Don't let little things ruin your day

Let's say it's a Monday morning. You go to work and spill your coffee. You immediately get angry and think "this day is already off to a bad start." Then each time something happens that you aren't pleased with, you have that same negative reaction. Because of how you react (not the scenario itself) your happiness is directly affected. By simply changing your attitude and saying something like, "oh, silly me," you are rerouting the 'bad' situation into a neutral one. Try to take those daily curveballs lightly and smile at them instead of letting them take over you.

Get physical

Although I want to keep the focus on mental techniques, I would be crazy not to mention exercise. Physical activity is proven over and over again to prevent and even cure anxiety and depression. I don't pressure myself to do any specific amount of exercise, but as long as I am moving my body every day in some way, I know I am receiving direct benefits. This one is a no-brainer. Exercise --> Happiness

Practice smiling

Yes, I literally want you to smile. It can be in the mirror, to a friend, into thin air- it doesn't matter. As long as you are smiling, you are actually accomplishing a lot. Just the pure act of smiling helps boost your mood, reduce anxiety, and contribute to your overall happiness. Next time you're feeling down, try to smile for 5 or 10 seconds. Even if you don't feel an immediate relief, it is still working wonders inside your brain.

Be grateful

A large part of being happy is knowing what you want, but being grateful for what you have. After waking up or before going to bed, take a couple minutes to think of all the things you're thankful for. This is important because so many people believe that once they have what they want in life, that they will finally be happy. The real key to being happy is accepting every stage you go through. Keep in mind that you are put through hard times in order to learn a lesson or find an underlying meaning.
