5 Things I Do Everyday

5 things i do everyday practicing mindfulness

Health is so much more than what meets the eye.

Although most people believe that a balanced diet and exercise are the main components to good health, there are a few more things that have equal importance.

Mental health is the basis of every aspect of life. Think about it this way- it would be difficult (even impossible) to excel in school, work, physical fitness, or a social life while struggling with mental health issues like anxiety or depression. With that said, in order to live your best life, you must practice mindfulness and self-awareness every single day.

Today I want to share 5 of the things I do every day to maintain my mental health. Keep in mind that there is no one-size-fits-all recipe to mindfulness. Feel free to get ideas and inspiration while reading, then take time to think of some new habits that apply to your own life.

1. CHALLENGE

Each day, I try to challenge myself with something no matter how big or small. Whether it's completing a workout, creating a new recipe, or conquering a project at work, all of these activities give me the opportunity to feel accomplished. When you achieve something, your brain releases dopamine, causing you to feel happier and more positive. Each time you complete a new task, you are more and more inclined to want to do it again, thus increasing your overall motivation (learn more).

2. SHOW LOVE

Even if I don't physically say the words "I love you," I still try to hug or show compassion for someone close to me each day. I'll hug my sister, tell my parents I love them, or even message a friend saying "I miss you." These acts not only remind me of how lucky I am, but also spread positivity and good vibes to others. Maintaining healthy and loving relationships are so important because they help people cope with stressful situations and decrease anxiety and depression (learn more).

3. SOCIALIZE

Interacting with others is a simple way to increase happiness. When I feel stressed out, I tend to isolate myself. To counteract that feeling, I push myself to get out and interact whether it's a quick trip to the store or dinner with friends. Talking, whether it's to strangers or friends, increases your mood and even strengthens your immune system and cognitive skills (learn more).

4. LAUGH

This one sounds a little corny, but smiling and laughing have a crazy way of making you feel better within seconds. Finding something to make you laugh or even forcing a smile can help you feel better and decrease negative feelings immediately. My go-to source of laughter and positivity is visiting my favorite Youtube channels like Shane Dawson, Saturday Night Live, Jeffrey Star, or Molly Burke (see more ways to increase happiness).

5. APPRECIATE

Each morning, I try to start out my day by showing appreciation for something in my life. It usually lasts a few short moments and can either be written down or thought of in my head. Some days my gratitude is simply for waking up and being alive. Other days, I think of my favorite qualities, opportunities I've gotten, or things I'm proud of (7 ways to show self-love).

Now that you have some ideas in mind, try to think of how you can apply this to your life. These habits might seem daunting, but they end up becoming a normal part of your day once you get the hang of it.
